Metro is barely more animated than DWM.

Also, the menu that pops up when you move your mouse to the lower left corner of the screen in Windows 8 is the Start Menu - it's still the same thing nonetheless, just that it has been reorganized.

Backwards compatibility? I thought Metro was a light environment for tablets, not something to replace the typical interface, just a thing on the top.

No, Microsoft have been quite clear on this. Metro is the new primary interface. The Desktop is there for classic applications. That said, it doesn't mean that the Desktop will be a second-class citizen. Developers will still be encouraged to use it, and MS are still going to use it for apps that don't quite fit with the Metro style - Office 15 and the Windows Server 8 Admin Tools are good examples of modern "classic" apps. They just wouldn't make sense as touch-first Metro apps, in those cases, the classic Desktop is essential, particularly in the case of Office, where they'd have no hope of retaining even a fraction of the functionality in pure Metro.

Essentially, what Microsoft are trying to do is make touch-friendly the standard rather than the exception.

Hybrids are awful from my hearings. A friend got some for a set of PC's at work and he didn't notice any performance gains.

Stick to a 60GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. I recommend the Vertex 2 if you can get one at a nice price. They've shot down over the last year and can probably be had for under $130.

We have been with the start button for years and years and we have gotten used to that interface ever since if it just stays the same in the next 20 years then the new OS will only have minor changes (themes, cursors, icons etc.) Yes it may take a long time to get used to but its optimized for touch and keyboard n mouse (Press Page down, and Page down on the keyboard on metro ui) I mean look at Google they keep changing the interface from topbar to a drop down list

If you're a student you can get it for free from Autodesk, along with a lot of other software, I've done it. If you're not a student you should pay for the program rather than stealing it-otherwise your causing sites being shut down...

In my opinion the start button is sort of an advertisement for Windows, so I don't see why it would be removed. I am quite used to it being there...

The point of the desktop is to maintain backwards compatibility with older, non-Metro applications Just imagine what kind of a disaster Windows 8 would be if they completely and totally removed Windows Explorer from the desktop editions.

Backwards compatibility? I thought Metro was a light environment for tablets, not something to replace the typical interface, just a thing on the top.

If they totally removed the ability to run normal applications no-one would get Windows for desktop!

This doesn't apply to touch screens, you swipe in from the right to open that bar on a touch enabled device, just like they showed off last year.

EDIT: Even if it is like this by default, the article says that it still appears whenever you hover your mouse to that area of the screen anyway, so it hasn't been removed from Windows as such, just that it's hidden most of the time.

Yes, I know that, my Total Windows Experience Index is 5.9, BUT why the video card Experience index (Game Perfomance and Graphics perfomance are lower than another 560ti video cards?, in this case is 6.7 for both)

I'd start off trying to find a motherboard reference - a lot of older PC motherboards had a soldered in CMOS battery, but they also had a set of jumper pins to connect an external battery. If there isn't one on the board, you could try desoldering the battery and soldering a battery holder in its place.

Thank you everyone for your answers!
Just some of you know I won't be install the SSD into my current system, as I said I plan on building a "new" system.
For now it looks like the 60GB SSD and Variable HDD seems to be most popular so I will take to my top choice, thank you
other people I will still take your setups to consideration. I did at the start of my search want a Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD
but it costs like $230 AUD and will drain my HDD money. My original intention for the SSD was really just to "Try" out this
new craze of super fast SSDs, with a bit of extra money in my rig budget I thought "hey why not ditch out ~50AUD for a SSD
just for my operating system would run very fast. As for loading up other programs I'm quite ok with HDD Speed.

Just one question. Does copying a file from a HDD to SSD or vice versa make it very slow? As in like slower than the HDDs rated
operational speed because I worry running programs may be even slower while converting from Flash to Mechanical or vice versa

Also, tbh, thanks to TPB, I'm having access to alot of old and obscure stuff that otherwise would be nigh impossible to obtain in my country. Try purchasing Solyaris (Tarkovsky's version) or Conquest of Paradise here. Good luck !

If you don't want to use a desktop environment, don't. Use a pared-down window manager or command line. That's kind of the point of Linux. You HAVE that choice. And that wasn't the point of this thread. The thread is ABOUT desktop managers, not whether or not we should use them.

I have the latest version of the Nvidia Drivers and yes 1333MHz is the standard speed for a DDR3 Memory

I was thinking that the problem is the PCIe speed (it says 8x instead of 16x), Could it be the problem?

I think now they are going to far. I mean, the Start was really an revolution ... And now after only 2 major releases it gets deleted?

Taskbar, start button and start menu first came with 95, so it's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 major releases... I got used to it too (so did most if not all Windows users trough the years), but sometimes it's nice to see something completely new, so I wouldn't mind the change...
Windows 9x is 4.x
Windows 2000/XP is 5.x
Windows Vista/7/8 6.x
So 2 Or am I counting wrong?

Before investing a lot of money in a huge SSD one should spend some time thinking about which benefits this is supposed to bring. An installation usually consists of data which is only read and also data which is frequently written. SSDs only support a limited number of write accesses which makes them pretty inappropriate for installations where there's a lot of data to write.

An extreme case is a developer's machine like mine. When I build my project I easily write data of 500..1000 MBs (large webapp, contains lots of stuff besides the actual Java classes). Some colleagues simply installed everything on SSDs and regretted it, as after about a year they started dying. Some guys had a smarter approach, they got themselves HDDs and lots of main memory which would get mounted into a RAM disk at bootup. That RAM disk would contain all the data which gets written while working. The actual source code is still on the HDD, so there's no danger of losing anything if the machine locks up or powers off.

In general, SSDs may make some sense for the operating system's base installation. I'm not too familiar with Windows, but as far as I remember, it's pretty difficult to separate a Windows installation into a readwrite and readonly part. On Unix systems this is rather easy. I even used to run my Linux'es /usr tree on a read-only partition a couple of years ago but found in the end that it was not worth the hassle (had to remount,rw each time I wanted to install something). However the base system on SSD does make sense, loading applications gets much faster. Thus, having both, a HDD and an SSD seems another valid option.

Since I usually don't run more than 7 programs a day I stick to HDD and RAM for now

Personally, I find Windows Phone 7 a little too easy, if you know what I mean. Honestly, why use live tiles, when you can open the corresponding application in a few seconds? Sure, it is convenient, don't get me wrong, but I just don't understand the point.

Taskbar, start button and start menu first came with 95, so it's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 major releases... I got used to it too (so did most if not all Windows users trough the years), but sometimes it's nice to see something completely new, so I wouldn't mind the change...

Today and in the last days some screenshots made it into the web... And know what? Now they deleted the start-button, not completly but it is not shown by standart. You have to move the mouse to the left of the superbar, which is only for pinning now, and then after some time it blinks up.
I think now they are going to far. I mean, the Start was really an revolution ... And now after only 2 major releases it gets deleted? I mean this can't be an interface.
Nearly all graphic operating system got a "start" menu, which is easly to handle and useful.
What do you think?

But adding the branding will require editing system resources.
Those resources are not critical and the edits will not break anything, but they require a "mkinitramfs" to see the changes, being the initramfs a critical part of the system.

First the LibraNext project has been scrapped. To bad, it was really good.

I have recently left Ubuntu (although I am willing to go back if 12.04 is better).

Here is a list of 4 distros I am considering:
Linux Mint
Fedora
Debian
openSUSE

If you don't like one of these please tell me why. If you have a different distro that you prefer I would like to know what it is. I am looking for a distro that has lots included: Programs, Drivers, Features, ect. If I can't find one I like I will go back to an older version of Ubuntu for now.

Is anyone interested in taking the LibraNext project for his own or at least take a look at what we have. I will ask the Dev Leader about uploading what we have somewhere. Just talked to him and he refuses. Didn't think it was worth anything.

What does everyone think about these "new" desktop environments for Linux? I personally haven't tried GNOME 3, but I found Unity to be pretty good, but nowhere near as good as good ol' GNOME 2.

Kindof repeating myself - why does it have to be a desktop environment?
IMO most of these things have got just too damn big. When I log in to a Gnome or KDE environment it's got worse than on Windows - I can't really run anything for about a minute.

I may be different from the average user (but, hey, what's this average in the first place?). Spending my day in front of a computer I usually run not more than 7 programs - well, that's a guess, let me count: jabber, mp3 player, web browser, shell window with lots of tabs, text editor. If someone nasty sends me stuff via email I probably also need some kind of Office program. Hey, that's only 6 after all

Now why do those desktop environments waste so much programming effort and system resources on making finding and picking an application out of the zillions installed on the computer as easy as possible? I for sure don't need it.

Admittedly, I'm an eye candy addict. I like to have dedicated wallpapers per workspace, and I appreciate nicely designed UI themes. Also of course I like to have an overview on the time, system status and volume control, but that stuff should not get in the way.

Now having put my criteria here, why should I use a "desktop environment" like Gnome or KDE? I want my memory for applications rather than the environment in which they run. As written in another thread already I find WindowMaker a very good compromise - it is fast and modest in resource usage, looks good, does window managing very well and has a nice configuration panel (I still often prefer editing the configuration files in a text editor, but I don't have to!) and the dock with drag and drop support. Something even MacOS does not provide out of the box: besides the omnipresent dock there's also one that can be filled individually for each workspace.

Admittedly, sometimes I use a 'desktop environment' for a couple of months, mostly out of curiosity (I'm not ideological about this, if something fits my needs any better, then why not use it?), but in the end I've always returned to WindowMaker.

It's definately not an original CD copy. It's missing the Microsoft headers in the ISO and are replaced with "NERO___BURNING_ROM", dated 2002-10-08. Nero doesn't add this header during a CD copy, only when the ISO has been manually created.

I've used a 10GB disk on a P3, by using backup/restore ... Not the greatest way to 'transport' an OS/2 install but it worked.
For the last 10 years, over all generations of PCs I owned in that period of time, I used to clone my OS/2 installation by booting the system from an OS/2 command line floppy (which I usually had to update with more recent device drivers) and then xcopy. Simple and reliable, and I wonder if I would have been able to get OS/2 running on the later machines at all otherwise

Recently I got myself a used Thinkpad and went the easy way - bought eCs which installed surprisingly well on that box. However I still miss the look and feel of OS/2 2.x, I never came to like the GUI renovation which came with Warp 4.

Got it downloaded, uploading it to 2shared now (Mediafire wont accept links more than 200 mb), the file is 787 MB. It has the original game, the Pirates Moon Expansion which is not installed, a no cd crack, the original soundtrack, many tools for the game, and a few patches which once again are not installed. The game is untouched. Will post the download link when ready.

Depends on the app. If the app has a configuration panel that menu is the place to look for it.
But really, on a mobile OS you don't want to have to hit that tiny spot with your thumb just to get that menu...
And since the preferences aren't anything you need to access all the time I think that's OK the way it is.

Yep, that is really the most important disadvantage of Android IMO. When I started using Android it was for a software project, and I had used WebOS before. It felt like a p(l)ain downgrade to me.
On a phone I want an interface that allows me to do things without having to dedicate my whole attention to it, ideally just with my thumb. Both WebOS and IOS do that pretty well, Android is still a complete failure in that respect.

Good point. Android devices usually need pretty fast hardware to work well. Last year I was involved in a software project for Android and had lots of test devices. Most of them were plain crap for what we did, just because processing power was insufficient.

However compared to WebOS I would not say that Android is in general slower. Once the VM has loaded the classes you are using, Java apps can be very fast. On WebOS the web-technology used for displaying the GUI is still the bottleneck.

If open source development really kicks off, there's still a lot of possible optimisation, from WebKit improvements to smarter use of it. I really hope that WebOS will not just disappear after the current devices have died out.

Yeah, WebOS may be slower than CyanogenMod'd Android, but it is still easier to use, and feels like it is natural. When you scroll a page too much, you can see the empty area (so you can infinitely scroll), then it goes away after a second. iOS also has that. Android doesn't. Which makes it kinda strange to see why it still doesn't have that.

And still, if you have widgets, yes. But what if you already have too many widgets and just want to use other settings, which are still hidden somewhere in the Settings app.

Actually, iOS has hardware acceleration since 2007, and the first version - 1.0 (hence it's native on iDevices). Android has got it since 3.0, as you said (still lags at some point), so yeah.

This is certainly true for most apps. The culprit is the web-based technology underneath. There once was an article in the NYT claiming that the whole idea was doomed from the beginning as WebKit simply was insufficient for getting to performance comparable to IOS (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/02/technology/hewlett-packards-touchpad-was-built-on-flawed-software-some-say.html?_r=2&hpw).
However the Pre3 is a pretty fast phone, and the software runs pretty smoothly on it.

The main cause of interface lag has always been lack of hardware acceleration, which iOS had from day one. Android does this since 3.0 for most of its rendering, so newer phones with 4.0 are a significant leap forward here up to a point, where lags while scrolling are not an issue to mention anymore.

I personally don't own an iOS-device, but from what I've heard it's also not heaven on earth and e.g. the notification system on android is still better than the one on iOS (as I said, I have no personal experience, just what people are saying) and the new "webOS-style" multitasking-scheme since 3.0 is also one of the points superior to the plain old "Android-style" LRU-List of App-Icons still used in todays iOS

EDIT: don't want to claim, that android as a whole is superior to iOS, it's just not as simple as "Apple is best in everything" like quite a few people would like it to be

Most home users will be fine with Windows Home Premium and even small business users who don't use domains. Many of the missing features can be bypassed with 3rd party software anyways. If you want XP Mode, get Virtualbox or the VMLite XP Mode. If you want remote desktop there are many other programs out there, I like Teamviewer. Most people don't even know what version of Windows 7 they have.

On Honeycomb and newer there is a menu by the clock that can toggle wifi, etc very similar to what WebOS has. I find WebOS to still be a bit nicer at it but Android has come a long way since Gingerbread. Also you can add shortcuts commonly used settings or widgets to toggle these. I seems more tedious to turn on Wifi in iOS compared with having the power control widget on an android device.

I'm not sure why you think Android is so slow. iOS is fast because its a much simpler OS with minimal background services and mulittasking and no desktop/widgets, which has its adcantages such as having more hardware power available for the current running app. On the Touchpad Android boots faster than WebOS and launches apps faster than WebOS. But its running Cyanogenmod which is a pure source derived build with speed in mind and none of that bloatware that phones have which makes a huge difference. Also the Touchpad has some pretty decent hardware 1.2ghz dual core ARM and 1GB of RAM so pretty much anything should run smoothly on it. Its a totally different experience than on a bloated android phone where all the RAM is gone and there is lag on menus.

That being said the Touchpad is a great tablet if you want to try WebOS and I love that you can dual boot. Besides Android there is an ARM build of Ubuntu that works, and there have even been talks of running Windows 8 on it if we ever get an ARM beta.

1333MHz is a standard speed for DDR3. If you're at 665MHz (Actually 667MHz) then you're likely using older DDR2.

MS aren't using food names, they're sticking with things that end in O at the moment - NoDo, Mango, Tango, Apollo...

The metro ui is optimized for touch screen, but sometimes it hard just to find things, such as applications. The live tiles I find easier so I know if I got new mail or if I get a notification on Facebook

I played around with a friend's Windows Phone 7 device… And the icons where all a jumble of light blue squares… Of course, the squares are huge squares that took up a 5th of the screen…

Yes, and I think that is the main problem with Android. Interface is not smooth, also too many options. From what I have seen, WebOS interface is much easier to use. 3D games are actually pretty easy to render for ARM chips nowadays, so they will be fast on, well, anything (except low-budget devices).

I don't know about WebOS, but to compare iOS with Android, you can choose a Wi-Fi network easier on iOS (which I connect to very frequently). Let's see:

iOS: Settings --> Wi-Fi
Android: Settings --> Wireless & Networks --> Wi-Fi --> Wi-Fi settings

Even apps settings are somewhere hidden:

iOS: Settings --> [APPNAME]
Android: Settings --> Applications --> Manage Applications --> [APPNAME]

So the settings are correctly organized based on what people use more and less frequently. Also, the overall laginess of Android at some points makes you think you are using a 90s PC with the OS loaded from a floppy. That's my opinion of course.

So yeah, that's an OS made for humans, who want an easy access to data.

my girlfriend has a WebOS phone and it's GUI and way of interaction feels really nice, but there is one thing, that cannot be held for good about webOS: speed...every app, regardless how helloworldish-small it is, takes in the scale of seconds to launch

unfortunately they never quite got around this problem except for using really strong hardware like in the touchpad

About the build number, I'm not willing to expect what I guessed was right. I've only read this before:

This article talks about the origin of Windows 7 Final RTM Build numbers. It discussed why build numbers end with "00". There's a story about this. At the period of Windows XP development, a new manager from Connect brought this "00" end "convension". And before he came, the build number was added one by one rather than sharp ones.

And the "technical" reason of being divided by 16 is that the QFE Team preserves the last 4 bits for service packs, thus 16 SPs are preserved. (Well, I actually don't know why they preserve such many SPs) This is a requirement from Windows Vista, yet the article doesn't explain the reason why Vista need this, just says it's a demand of Vista and later OS.

Thouth there are "convensions" & "requirements", I'm also not able to say what will be the exact build number of Windows 8 RTM.

It's not hard to find applications...

The app list is sorted alphabetically, you can jump between letters and there's a search button for the list. You'd have to be quite special to still find finding an app on a Windows Phone difficult.

I had my first experience with Solaris on a Sparc Classic (one of those small cubes)
I love this form factor, too. The sun4c and sun4m members in my collection are SPARCstation IPC and SPARCclassic.
it's a pity they dropped the form factor and never built machines faster than 50MHz microSPARC I

Note: you can indeed run Solaris 9 on a Classic, it only took 14h on mine to install

SSD Drives are generally faster than a 7200rpm HD, they can access files pretty fast and bootup takes a few seconds also depending on your CPU. But you should never defragement a SSD it shortens it life even more and it lowers the speed of read and write

I was surprised at how well WebOS does multitasking when I tried it on my Touchpad. It felt like a decent OS and I'm surprised that HP discontinued it so quickly. I think they gave up on it too soon. Right now I dual boot WebOS and Android ICS. Android's biggest advantage right now is number of apps, but there have been talks of a way of being able to run Android apps in WebOS. With all of the developer support on this tablet, I can't wait to see the source based WebOS ROMs that will come out.

I only said "00" because of the more recent versions of Windows having RTM builds ending in "00": Windows Vista/Server 2008 and WIndows 7/Server 2008 R2 (even Windows XP's RTM build number ended in "00", and although Windows Server 2003's build number ended in a higher build number, it had also been compiled for over a year after Windows XP, despite originally sharing the same builds when development started as the Server counterpart of Whistler).

No offence at all or anything, but those versions of Windows that you listed above are all older versions of Windows. Remember that some versions of Windows are so old that they even predate strict build numbers.

But the fact remains the same that since Windows Vista, the RTM build number has always ended in "00", and as such, I'm referring to those, because those are the most recent versions of Windows. Likewise, the Service Pack releases increase the first portion of the build number by one digit (as in "6001", "6002", "7601", etc...), again, since Windows Vista/Server 2008, whereas this also wasn't true of the earlier versions of Windows.

However, as I've also said above, although we have quite a strong idea as to what the build number will be like, no one will know the exact build number of the RTM build of Windows 8 until news is released of its compilation.

I noticed that the forum does not yet support tapatalk.
I read forums a lot using my mobile phone, and tapatalk is incredibly useful as you read and write from within an app rather than a web browser (with all those problems resulting from small screen, tiny fonts etc.). For using tapatalk with a forum, the forum owner needs to install the tapatalk plugin (there is one for phpBB) and register the forum at tapatalk.com, which is free. Users who want to use the mobile client can purchase it for little money (there are several for Android, IOS, WebOS).

Maybe this would be an option for this forum?

PS: I'm not in any way associated with them

Well, as far as the RTM build number is concerned, I think that knowing from Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 earlier (and probably for the reasons that PryStar93 mentioned above), it will almost certain end in "00".

However, I do not think that it will be exactly the same as that of Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 (the same build number with exception to the first digit, "8" instead of "7"), since we knew that although the RTM release of Windows Vista was, for the first release, Build 6000, and for the Service Pack 1 release of Windows Vista, as well as Windows Server 2008, Build 6001, the RTM release of Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 was not Build 7000 or Build 8000, but rather Build 7600, with the Service Pack 1 build number being Build 7601.

As such, I would say that almost certainly, as with Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 earlier, the build number of the RTM release of Windows 8 will end in "00", and will also have an extension, for example:

Build 8500.17754 (compare with Build 7600.16385).

However, despite the fact that we can already tell how the build number will almost certainly appear, since not even the Release Candidate or pre-RTM builds of Windows 8 have been compiled yet (let alone the actual RTM "Gold" build, or even the RTM Candidate builds, from where the RTM "Gold" build has been selected for Windows), we otherwise can't tell the exact build number for the RTM build of Windows 8.

I will say this, though, that we might receive the RTM Candidate builds of Windows 8, and that one of them will be selected as the RTM "Gold" release of Windows 8, just as we did earlier with Windows 7/Server 2008 R2, not to mention that even if such a build is declared as being RTM "Gold" (meaning that it will therefore be deleted from the BetaArchive FTP server), I'll still keep it nonetheless - I'm making an effort to keep all of the Windows 8 builds that I happen to receive.

It might be a bit of a long post, but I thought I might just explain it a bit.

Yes, they are... But by default DemoGame.MSVC90.exe is called and maybe this was the problem...

Be sure that you have compiled .u files in DemoGame/Script. Without that will wont work.
If you don't have, then run ScriptMake(SD) - Release.bat or ScriptMake(SR) - Release.bat. Don't forget than you need source script to do that - you can find it in Development package. After that, DemoGame should work and editor too...

Hello guys! well This is not a problem, but this things is bothering me.

Well I have bought a Nvida 560 Ti Card, everything is perfect, just I have a problem

For one reason my motherboard detects that my video card is working with PCIe 8x, but everybody knows that this video card works in PCIe 16x
When I see the Nvidia Control Panel, it reports that the Video Card is installed in a PCIe 8x 2Gen
GPUz reports me the same, but when I render something GPUz reports me that the video card is in a PCIe 16x 2.0
The bios information reports that the video card is running in a PCIe 8x Slot

I recommend 60GB SSD for your boot drive and then whatever size HDD you want for your programs/games/storage. I have an OCZ Vertex II which is 60GB and has a max speed of 285MB/s, which is the maximum for SATA2. It's got faster counterparts so it's your choice what you go for.

With an SSD, IOPs is important. You could get one with 500MB/s speed but only 40,000IOPS (a regular HDD does about 100IOPS by the way). The higher the IOPs generally the faster it will be, but look at what the IOPs refers to. A lot refer to linear speed which means nothing. It has to be random read/write IOPs to get the best performance.

You should use hardware review sites to make the choice as they'll explain the ups and downs for the model of SSD you're looking at.

I paid £100 for my 60GB SSD and I'm very happy with it. It was easily 3-4x faster than my 2x250GB in RAID0 for most operations.

I had my first experience with Solaris on a Sparc Classic (one of those small cubes) with Solaris 2.4. Actually, when I got it, it was running 2.6 but since the machine could not cope with larger amounts of main memory and it was very slow the way it was, I took the gamble to reinstall the machine with 2.4. Oh, good-old OpenWindows

In those days (must have been around 2000) porting stuff from Linux was still rather easy as there was still plenty of software not depending on those huge frameworks on which today's desktop environments are based. I had some fun getting my favorite tools compile and then use the box as a mail terminal (it had one of those nice and very large - and heavy! - tube screens). I still regret having had to sell it at a time when I needed every single penny..

Yeah I forgot to tell you that junctions have alot slower access times because it goes through the hdd, but it's still way faster. In my case I had already installed windows on my hdd and it would be too much effort to re install and re download all my apps. Sadly your mobo does not support sata 3, so it wont be able to use the full potential of the ssd. You could buy a new mobo, but im not sure its worth it because you could buy a bigger ssd for the same money as well.

I'd personally recommend splitting your money equally between the SSD and the HDD.

Also, two things to think about: You really need SATA3 to make proper use of an SSD, and hold off for the HDD as long as possible - prices are just starting to come back down after the shortage because of the flooding in Thailand. You'll probably be able to get a notably better HDD in a month or so than you can now for the same price.

Also, installing Windows onto the SSD is essential - it's not just about boot times. Even if you were to junction your entire Program Files out onto an SSD, but keep Windows on a HDD, then you're still going to take a hit because all apps rely on shared libraries in Windows.

I recommend you go for a 60gb+ ssd, you store way more apps, here in aus it costs $100 and the rest $250 you can spend on a hdd. Also you need a 32gb drive minimum for a windows install, because windows uses your system drive for updates and it wont have enough space on a 8 or 16 gb ssd.

I personally own a 60gb patriot pyro ssd, and I use it by storing Windows on my hdd, and apps I frequently use on my ssd. This gives me alot more space on my ssd, and I dont care about boot times so windows stays on my hdd.

As for steam apps, I have most of them on my hdd, but the ones i most frequently play i redirect to use my ssd via junctions(LINK HERE). Oh and one more thing, do your research and make sure the ssd uses the latest sandforce controller. Hope this helps .

I had a look at Unity and found it kind of cute. However this whole idea of saving space is not new (although it got more and more forgotten in the days of KDE and Gnome). I personally like WindowMaker which has a dock looking a bit like in Unity, but apart from that does not much more than managing windows. It is very fast and stable, and also it looks good IMO. BTW there's a group of people who revived development on it in the last 1..2 years (I happen to be one of them). I think it is worth a look (sometimes the 'back to the roots' paradigm is not a bad idea at all).

I'd like to make a point for an alternative to IOS and Android on smartphones. Being still somehow emotionally attached to OS/2 which I used for a long time I found myself preferring the non-mainstream smartphone platform, too

What makes it me preferring it to the two big ones? Now first of all the hardware is really nice - the Pre3 is powerful and has this really nice hardware keyboard, and I also like the Pixi which is much less powerful but can be considered the smallest smartphone out there.
This goes along with a busybox-based Linux underneath, and unlike on Android it really does feel like a Linux system. Consequently the first thing I did was install some xterm-like app. Nice thing, while on a train with my colleagues (all developers) we needed to download a file while the net was poor - the guys with their Androids kept restarting the download, I did a 'wget --continue' and got there frist

Now WebOS has a really active open source community. It does not come with the largest number of apps, but it has practically everything one needs (the skype integration is really nice). The phones produced by HP (Veer and Pre3) can be bought for little money through amazon's market or ebay, and they're more than worth the money, actually you get much more for it than if you purchase an Android device.

The whole thing reminds me of good old OS/2. Abandoned by its makers, kept alive by open source developers, will probably not last forever

I have thought a few scenarios for my new builds storage:
1. Go with a OCZ Technology 32 GB ($50AUD) + Hitachi 3.5" Deskstar 3TB SATA HDD 5400RPM ($220AUD) $270
2. Go with a Seagate MOMENTUS XT, 750GB, 7200RPM ($250AUD) + Seagate 3.5" Barracuda 1TB ST31000524AS SATA3 7200RPM ($105) $355
This is the one I need help with (Can I fit Windows 7 or maybe 8 (In future) on a 8GB SSD)
3. Go with a Kingston Digital, Inc. 8 GB SSD ($40AUD) + Hitachi Deskstar 4TB 5400RPM ($329.98CAD)<-Not Sure Australian Price yet. $360~approx.

If you can think of a better scenario which enables me to use a SSD for my operating system please do post it. Budget for this is about $350 Tops. (AUD)

There's a book on Windows 2000, based on one of the late betas, which said that there was to be a consumer version released in 2000 (w2k was released in 1999), based on the 2k code.

Neptune is indeed based on the Win2k beta 2 code, but the header file was changed to be vers 5.5 (i suppose to match one of the DOS versions). A good deal of the code did make its way into Windows ME and Windows 2002, but there did not seem to be suitable space for it, so it was abandoned and merged.

It's also that Neptune was one of the competing teams versions of the 'next big thing', but microsoft pulled out of competing teams, and merged what they considered commercially desirable into xp.

Well, similar to requirements would be compiling a "lighter" Longhorn:
256 mb of memory (recommended minimum of 512 mb)
Processor 700 MHz or more
Hd of at least 20 gs (installed on the system may be less than 4GB)
This all of the updates, and other things integrated, not so fast, and it is compatible with all commonly used ....
However, what is making me think about quitting, is not found a way to port the interface of Vista beta 1, which for me is perfect and without bugs grotesque, and explorer of the 5048 is very problematic, and still not getting success or, rather, an idea or people who can help me circumvent the main problem of it.

I don't really like the "Metro UI" I find it looks (ugly)… I also don't understand the big deal about these "live tiles"… I like looking at my icons…

Thing is, this guy probably played around with this "Mango" device for less than a day …

You do know you can have the 25GB from SkyDrive and the 5GB from iCloud on iOS 5? SkyDrive for iOS… Of course, I don't use it myself because I already have DropBox and Box.com… Of course, I rarely use them…

I love it when people take Windows 7 build numbers and expect them to match up perfectly with Windows 8's various releases. I would doubt that the Windows 8 RTM will be 8600, but no one can say for sure until we get there.
I've heard that for "technichal" reasons RTM build numbers should be able to be divided by 16, and from Vista it is a "convension" that build numbers can be divided by 100 ...
so, would RTM be 8800?

Is it possible to select the "AUTO" option in Setup (that is, to select the option to automatically detect your hard drive upon boot up)? If not, then I would say that it doesn't have support for automatically detecting hard drives, meaning that you will have to write down the information from the hard drive label and enter in the information manually.

Also, if you have the proper information regarding these systems, it might be possible to install the hard drive in another system (one of which doesn't store the BIOS Setup information on the hard disk itself), create a file (or copy such a file to the hard disk) that contains the proper Setup configuration information, and then reinstall it in the other system, to see if that works.

Finally, I'll try searching for information relating to the Epson Equity systems online, to see if that could also help you here.

So I rescued an Epson Equity IIe from a school scrap bin, and it's looking like the bios information is stored on a hard drive.
The catch 22 is there wasn't a hard drive installed, so when I run the setup program, it doesn't recognize the one I put in.

Anyone have a solution?

I think the most important thing with SKUs is to make it feel like the higher SKUs have additional features, rather than the lower ones having features removed. Windows 7 starter really feels like it has features removed (no desktop background changes, thats just ridiculous). On the other hand, why not just have one or two editions and instead of anytime upgrade, just have feature upgrade where you can buy a component such as xp mode or bitlocker seperately from anything else?

those old versions of UNIX were built for old machines, and not all that.. adaptable... UnixWare 7x is your best bet.

Actually that's only to within Sweden. Outside of Sweden he only gets 100Mbps/100Mbps.

Actually, I've noticed it depends on the routing. To BA I can't get more than 100Mbps, but I can get around 400-500Mpbs to the US, and around 250Mbps to the UK. When I get the time I'll try to map my routes but I am not complaining either way . But the speed does vary a lot depending on where I try to download stuff from. I guess my ISP is configured basically for a default throughput of 100Mbps per client, but since I am on a special setup I might get more at times. But within my ISP network and the Swedish University network (SUNET and associates) I always top out at 1Gbps.

Looks great! I've always liked the brushed metal-esque effect on windows, conjures memories of Quicktime on my old Windows 98 machine.

Just a suggestion, but I think a sub-style (or whatever it's called) with everything the same but a transparent taskbar and jumplists would look pretty sweet. Having absolutely no experience in theme development at all, feel free to completely disregard this part of the post.

Seems BA already had this one (as a mislabeled "Microsoft Windows 2000 Server (5.00.2195.1) [+SP1].rar") but it would be great if someone could verify it and compare it against this new one (uploaded as "Microsoft Windows 2000 Server (5.00.2195.1).rar"). The ISO contents do differ, but when I installed both neither showed any evidence of any service packs. Perhaps OEM and retail versions? Let me know what you find out. I've kept the mislabeled file on the server until the mystery has been solved.

Indeed I was looking at the Corners. The last time I've ever saw that was Tiger. I think Apple should take that old look back into consideration. IMO

Yea it tends to get annoying to see People needing help with their computers in the homepage over and over again. Wish we had a live chat service for this kind of reason.As far as a live chat feature is concerned, I'm afraid it might result in people seeing an oppurtunity to flame each other, especially considering that this is a relatively large community.

If people want to chat with each other, the best way to do it is by way of such a service as MSN/Windows Live, or something similar - this community is certainly no place for it.

While it may be a good idea in theory, it wouldn't work out well at all in practice.

Im only 12 and I really dont know how to open up the computer case and clean the fan out. its a HP 550. Before when I got the laptop you would feel warm air coming out of the air vents now you cant feel anything coming out! and the computer fan gets really loud!! and it gets hot really quickly..I have tried to open up the computer case with my dad but it failed..The laptop is over 3 years now..with a Intel Celeron 530 @1.73 Ghz. I have no warranty left as well.
